Eco-Friendliness

The second term for Workshop of Compiling Environment News, which took place in National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) for two days from October to November 2015, gave people a better understanding of environmental protection. Both seminars in the first session of workshop launched on Friday 2nd October were substantial in content for the audience to a certain degree. Previously, the first term for that in 2014 received numerous responses from students to hold for the next time and that truly came true.

‘The Open Information & Sustainability’ was delivered by Ray Peng (彭瑞祥), deputy director on behalf of Taiwan Environmental Information Association (TEIA). He provided several topics related to the environment not just in Taiwan but outside the country. Peng devoted to paying high attention to nature, especially for environmental protection chiefly in Taiwan. On the other hand, the public has rights to know about freedom of the press as well as basic human rights.

‘Translation & Compilation for News Release’ interpreted by Mira Tsou (鄒敏惠), who is currently an executive compiler also in the name of TEIA, made participants realise the essence of compiled international news release. Meanwhile, Tsou guided many techniques for translation in writing and how to select appropriate pieces of news to translate. It is absolutely useful for students not only in mass communication but in language departments and helpful for relevant workers in mass media to be more professional.

Next session of the workshop held on Friday 6th November was to comment on productions by trainees. Some of them made great efforts on their works, shared their thoughts on pieces of translation as well as underwent comprehensive self-evaluation. Instructors made a lot of discussions with trainees in the workshop. Generally speaking, participants gained unforgettable achievements since all the people were willing to hear both sides of the questions and interact with each other.

Most important of all, the competition of selected translation for a piece of news entitled “UK’s oldest tree is undergoing sex change, botanists say”, which was released by press association then from the Guardian, was extremely exciting for participants to challenge within fifteen minutes. As a matter of fact, this kind of contest belonged to written translation. It was seemingly involved in a little bit of sight translation so far as some trainees are concerned.

Each one of activities had given students, employees and even employers a rare and commendable opportunity not merely for their academic yet for their career. A number of participants did manage to do something eco-friendly in theory as well as practice after this workshop.
